Jason,

This "minimal set of changes" still broke things (even the self-build is
broken)!

But the main thing is that I thought we agreed that we will discuss it
_tomorrow_ and then start merging. I do not quite understand why you
felt you head to start landing large amounts of unstable code on our
(relatively) stable branch half a day before we get to discuss this in
person and come up with a consistent plan.

In any case, this is not a question of "live with 1 branch for a few
days", but the issues are that:
 - We need to keep the "(relatively) stable/unstable" separation and the
0.9.8.x is supposed to be the "stable" one;
 - I would like to get a chance to do testing and code reviews as things
land.

I agree in principle that var1 and keyword may belong to 0.9.8.x, but I
would like:
 - To make sure the code is sufficiently stable;
 - To make sure we are not making a large number of subtle tweaks to the
semantics. If we do, those belong to 0.9.9;
 - The two of us to take a careful look at the syntax and grammar
choices we are making.
